William served with the 9th Battalion in France, and transferred to the 35th Battalion in February 1918. He shot himself by accident in the left foot in April, he returned to Australian in March 1919.

He was awarded the British war medal and the Victory Medal. William’s name appears on the Milton Town Memorial with the rank of Private. After returning home to Termeil he later moved to Sydney.
