William Bartlett

Serial Number and Rank:  2719, PVT.
His brother Alfred Bartlett Serial number is 2720. Both enlisted in Kiama in October 1916.

Brother to Joseph Roy (Roy) Bartlett and Alfred Bartlett

Joseph Bartlett was a master butcher at East Milton, Joseph and his wife Jane nee Montgomery had a family of six boys, and three of their sons served in WW1. All three boys had attended Croobyar Public School.

The first to enlist was William Bartlett who was their second eldest son born in 1891, he first enlisted in October 1914, and was discharged in January 1915 his war records states he was unlikely to become an effective solider.

But this was not going to stop him, so he re-enlisted in October 1916 with this brother Alfred at Kiama. Also taking the trip to Kiama to enlist was James Backhouse from Termeil and John Arthur McEwan also from Milton. William and Alfred Bartlett had consecutive serial numbers of 2719 and 2720.

William left Australia for overseas duty in November 1916 aboard HMAT Benalla A2. He served in the 5th Battalion and later with the 37th Battalion, 5th Reinforcement, He fought in France from April 1917 and was wounded in action in June 1917, after which he was sent back to England to recover. He found himself was again in France in December 1917, after been wounded for a second time, he found himself once again back in hospital in England in May 1918. He was invalided for war service and arrived back on Australian soil in July 1919.

All three Bartlett brothers received the British War medal and Victory medal, and all served as Privates in WW1. Their names appear on four of our community WW1 memorials.
