New
Coastal Patrol rescue boat reflects boys' love of
sea
|
The events of
Bali will touch all of us for a long time. The bombings
of October 12 killed 88 Australians. Ulladulla, a coastal
village of the South Coast lost two of their sons, local
surfers Danny Lewis and Craig Dunn.
Last weekend, the Ulladulla Royal Volunteer Coastal
Patrol held a service of Dedication for their new rescue
vessel Lewis Dunn named after the two Ulladulla
surfers who were killed in the Bali bombing tragedy last
year. The Lewis-Dunn is a quick response vessel
that will replace the older Kylie III.
RVCP Commander Neil Wark welcomed all to the naming
ceremony held at Ulladulla Harbour. Catholic priest Fr.
Francis Tran conducted the service whilst watched by
members of the RVCP, family members of Danny and Craig
and the Ulladulla community.
The
7.5 metre Shark Cat Lewis Dunn costing $55,000 was
purchased using funds raised by the monthly Coastal
Patrol markets and donations from the community. Powered
by twin Mariner 235hp outboard motors and is capable of
more than 40 knots, ensuring a speedy response to any
emergency in all but the very worse seas.
Equipped with global positioning system, depth sounder
and all radios, the Lewis Dunn will enhance the
RVCP crew's search and rescue capability at night and in
bad weather.
Both Danny Lewis and Craig Dunn, grew up fishing and
surfing reflecting both the boys' love of the sea. The
Dunn family have been involved in professional fishing at
Ulladulla for over 50 years. Their families were honored
by the decision of the Ulladulla RVCP to name the new
boat after the boys.
Craig's mother Gayle spoke on behalf of the families and
thanked the RVCP and others for the service. "It is an
honour to have the boys memory preserved in such a
fitting way as Danny and Craig's lives always revolved
around the water" Gayle said.
"They would be proud to be part of the many challenges
the Lewis Dunn will face as it preforms its vital
role in ensuring the safe return of all sailors and
fisherman that use our coastline."
There was not a dry eye when Gayle thanked the RVCP for
preserving the memory of Danny and Craig, "knowing they
will be with the vessel forever, watching over their
playground".
Ulladulla RVCP is one of the largest divisions in NSW,
boasting over 80 active members. Maintaining a 24 hour
radio watch on coastal water with rescue crews on
constant standby to assists vessels in distress.
