John William Sperring at the age of 36 years, enlisted for WW1 service at Kiama in August 1916, and assigned to the 11th reinforcement of the 30th Battalion he came home to Milton nursing a vaccinated arm before he went into training, after which he was assigned as part of the 5th reinforcement of the 39th Battalion.
John was born in 1880 at Milton, the son of Francis Sperring and his wife Paulina nee Deal, He was working as a labourer when he enlisted. With the 39th he embarked on HMAT Benalla A24 in November 1916 from Sydney for overseas service. Also aboard from Milton was Thomas Duffy and Bertrie Roy Latta all with the 39th battalion and the Milton Mayor’s son Sidney Howard Riley with the 37 Battalion.
The 39th Battalion arrived in England in January 1917; they went to front line in France in April 1917. After 14 months of fighting in France John was wounded in action and sent back to England in June 1918 with a severe gunshot wound to the back and left shoulder.
John re-joined the 39th Battalion in October 1918 and returned to Australia in September 1919. He received the British War and Victory Medal for his war service.
On his return to Australia he married Elvina Hession of Milton in Balmain in 1920, they returned home to Milton, in 1922, John was a farm labourer at Milton and by 1937 John was a Fireman with the Ulladulla Council.
John’s name is listed on many of our local WW1 honour Rolls: Milton Ulladulla RSL Honour Roll and the Milton Town Memorial. As well as listed as William Sperring on the Milton Methodist and the Milton Methodist Flag.
