Joined the Light Horse April 1912; appointed 2nd Lieutenant October 1913. Enlisted 3 November 1914, 6th Light Horse Regiment. On 15 May 1915 "proceeded to join MEF (Mediterranean Expeditionary Force) Gallipolli".

To quote from the proceedings of a Medical Board: "Was at Anzac from May 20th to Sept. 19th. At the end of May he was knocked out by high explosive shell - unconscious for an hour - afterwards tremors and headache - resumed duty although nervous and tremors. The continuous shelling and strain then broke him down completely. Admitted to No. 2 General Hospital 25.9.15.

Suffering as above, 1 stone below weight. Now improving slowly but head is still not clear. His memory not good and he tires very quickly." Promoted to Lieutenant, he was "invalided to Australia" in November 1915, discharged and granted a pension.
