Springfield -
Ulladulla
The
Springfield homestead has been part of our district landscape
since 1874, and is part the Shoalhaven
Heritage LEP.
On
the western side of the Princes Highway, about halfway between
Ulladulla and Milton, is 'Springfield', an attractive ornate
Victorian weatherboard 11-roomed house with elaborate iron
lacework about the verandah. Considered distinct in its
architectural features it was built in the mid 1870s by Ephraim
Mison who arrived in the Ulladulla district by 1873 after making
good money from mining at Yalwal.
In 1874 he purchased 100 acres at Ulladulla on the main road
between Milton and Ulladulla to farm. On this property he cut down
a large tree, which he milled and above the stump built
Springfield, which is one level at the front and two levels at the
rear. It has been said the architecture of the windows has a
German influence and the wrought iron on the verandah was imported
from England. The locals called it "Mison's Folly". At the same
time Ephraim established a sawmill in Burrill St, Ulladulla and
starting up a dairy farm at Springfield.
