GRADY

Mary

18 June 1808

Executed 1808 not 1807. SG 19 Jun 1808: Yesterday morning John McNeal, Alexander Wilson alias Charles Boyle, and Mary Grady were executed at Sydney; and tomorrow is fixed for the execution of Felix Donnelly, Michael Bagan, and Elizabeth Conner at Parramatta. At half past 11 the three malefactors who have already expiated at their offences, left the gaol [sic], the two male prisoners walking closely behind a cart on which the female delinquent was conveyed to the place of execution: --on approaching which she fainted several times, and as nearer she approached, appeared more and more affected by the horrors of her condition, of which she did not appear thoroughly sensible until her death warrant was read to her the day previous to the execution.

The male suffers behaved in a manner becoming their unhappy condition; Wilson was rather of an advanced age; had served a former term of 7 years transportation; and had in this colony uniformily evinced a hardihood which could scarcely have failed ultimately to bring him to an ignominious end. - McNeal appeared to be about 30 years of age:-his offence was attended with circumstances of arrocity that must have precluded him from every hope of clemency His was a burglary, by means of which he had effected a robbery upon his master, of a valuable property over which he was placed as safeguard. At the place of execution he prayed aloud with much fervor, and met his fate with a firmness and composure, which it is earnestly to be hoped were the effect of true christian resignation, and sincere repentance.
