Sydney in church
records as HOLT. SG: 23 Mar 1806: On Monday last,
sincerely and universally lamented, Miss Lucy Alt,
daughter of Augustus Alt Esq. whose perfections
endeared her to all who had the pleasure of her
acquaintance the pious remembrance of which will
soothe the melancholy excited by her loss and while
paternal fondness dwells upon her virtues, the
painful regret of separation must relax, and her
chaste example long remain a pattern worthy to be
emulated. Fa: Augustus Theodore Henry Alt arr. free

SG May 1806: On
Monday last James Dobbs was executed pursuant to
his sentence at Sydney. Dobbs was a native of
Worcestershire and was a transport for Life, having
been capitally convicted at Warwick in the year
1796. He arrived on the Royal Admiral in Nov 1800,
and has almost ever since been suspected of
improper courses, though he always escaped
detection until it fell palpably on him for the
robbery of Mr Hassall's house at Parramatta, when
great part of the property being found upon him, he
was tried for his life; and being convicted upon a
charge of larceny, sentenced to 1000 lashes; of
which punishment one third was not inflicted. His
last offence, by his own declaration, was committed
when in a state of inebriety, a plea so immoral in
itself to permit the hope of benefit to result from
it, but nevertheless reflecting odium to any
housekeeper who could be prevailed upon to retail
spirits at improper hours to a man of his
description. (it is most likely the body was given
over for dissection

b. 1796. SG 7 Jul
1806: Last Tuesday fortnight the following very
melancholy circumstance occurred at Portland Head.
A servant of James Dunn, being employed in felling
timber close to this master's house, a tree of
immense size fell upon it and renting it asunder,
killed two fine children as they lay in bed,
besides maiming the mother in a most dreadful
manner as she sat by the bedside. Dunn had himself
providently got out of bed an instant before, or
must have inevitably shared the fate of his
unfortunate children, one of whom was a girl aged
10 years and the other a boy of seven. An inquest
was taken on the bodies and under some peculiar
circumstances Richard Morgan, the servant, was
taken under custody. Fa: Patrick Dunn convict Royal

Sydney Sydney Ground - Letitia O'Neal. SG: 23 Mar
1806 The Coroners Inquest assembled on Thursday
last on the body of an infant daughter of William
O'Neale on the Rocks whose death was occasioned by
her falling into a well the night before, behind
her fathers house. The child was 5 years old and in
the frequent habit of taking water from the wells,
by means of several steps descending into it, from
which it is supposed she slipped in by some
grievous accident and never afterwards recovered
sufficient breath to give sufficient alarm. She was
a remarkable little and promising child, the
admiration of the neighbours and a delight to her
inconsolable parents.

William PAGE and Abraham SMITH stood indicted
jointly, with having upon the 29th day of October
last, broke and entered a house at Fennel Farm and
stolen therefrom wearing apparel and other property
belonging to William Tracey, servant to Lieutenant
and Adjutant MINCHEN. The prisoners pleaded guilty
and were repeatedly admonished by the Judge
Advocate against persisting in a plea that rendered
all other proof unnecessary, if either of them
supposed that any circumstance was likely to arise
from the investigation that might prove favourable
to their case: - they nevertheless persisted and
the plea was confirmed accordingly.
