Bruce attended school at Barker College at Hornsby afterwards he was a clerk with Dalfety Pty Ltd before enlistment. He enlisted in the First Australian Light Horse and served with the Light Horse remount in Egypt, upon promotion to 2nd Lieut transported to the France.
