Anxiety Support Group for Ulladulla

A new monthly support group is starting in the Ulladulla area for people with problem anxiety, run by the Mental Health Association NSW (MHA). The new group will meet for the first time on the 26 May 2014, at 10.00am, and then will run on the fourth Monday of each month thereafter.

The Anxiety Support Group is beneficial for people who experience social phobia, panic attacks, generalised anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and agoraphobia. Some people find it hard to do simple things like socialise, visit crowded places or look out high windows, and as such anxiety can be very disruptive to their personal lives.

“People experiencing high levels of anxiety often feel very alone or different, but the fact is almost one in five Australians will experience a mental illness in a 12 month period,” said Elizabeth Priestley, CEO of the Mental Health Association NSW. “We’ve been running these support groups across NSW with great success. Some attendees say that their recovery really began when they joined a support group.”

“We find attendance at a support group a really positive step. Participants have the opportunity to express their experiences in a caring, friendly, supportive, non-judgemental atmosphere, learn from each other, and become inspired by each other’s journeys,” says Rachel Flint, MHA’s Anxiety Support Group program co-ordinator. Groups are open to family, friends and carers.

Group facilitator Daniel Thompson of Ulladulla’s Anxiety Support Group has a personal experience with anxiety disorder and said, “Taking the first step is always the hardest. I know if I didn’t take that first step, I wouldn’t be here today. Now I’m a facilitator for an anxiety help group, setting an example to others suffering and giving them hope for the future. There is a light at the end of our dark tunnel.”

Ulladulla’s new support group is FREE and there is no need to book attendance – simply turn up on the day.  Visit www.mentalhealth.asn.au for more information, or call MHA on (02) 9339 6000.
